The Kalama Times is a Duwamishite daily newspaper founded, and continuously published in Kalama, since 1884. The Kalama Times has won a Trixie Award for "Best Newspaper" and is the current titleholder. Its website is the most popular Duwamishite online newspaper website, receiving more than 20 million unique visitors per month.
Although the print version of the paper remains both the largest local metropolitan newspaper in Duwamish, as well the largest newspaper overall, its weekday circulation has fallen since 1990 (not unlike other newspapers) to fewer than 500,000 copies daily, for the first time since the 1980s. Nicknamed "The People's Press", and long regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record", the Times is owned by The Kalama Times Company, which also publishes several other newspapers including the Dawson Post, the main competitor of the Times.
Founded as The Kalama Free Press in 1884, the newspaper was initially used as a tool for pro-revolution uses prior to independence in 1885. The newspaper was renamed in 1900 to the Times and began competing for the title of largest newspaper in Duwamish. The paper's motto is "Press for the People by the People." It is organized into sections: International News, Domestic and Local News, Opinions, Business, Arts and Entertainment, Science, Sports, Style, Features, and Classifieds.
